Taking the impossible path
Much is made of taking the road less traveled, but what of taking the seemingly impossible path that has not yet been created? I took my dog Sam for a walk today. We normally go for a long easy stroll across the fields close to my house, but today it was very windy, muddy and have been raining for most of the day. The dark clouds that hung ominously over our normal pathways signaled more to come. At the entrance to the second field is a patch of woods with 2 pathways that run through it. The first leads down to a dead end and a pond about half way through, the second runs all the way down to the other end but starts slightly after the first. These 2 pathways are separated by a large, steep bank, big enough to not be able to see the other path when you are walking along. Sam was ahead of me and ran down the first pathway into the woods. I followed, thinking it might not be a bad idea, at least we would be sheltered from the wind and if the heavens did open at least the tree cover would stop us from getting completely drenched. We walked down to the pond and I stopped for a few minutes to let Sam have a run around and a paddle before heading back. As I turned to retrace our steps I watched Sam galloping up and down the steep bank, almost as easily as if it had been flat. For some reason I stopped and the thought crossed my mind - what if there was no going back, what if I could only go up? I started to look carefully at what I have always considered an impassable face of mud and prickly bushes. Before I could stop myself I found I had already picked a route and had started to climb. Whilst heading upwards I found the journey wasn't as tough as I had imagined. Footholes seemed to appear, branches were just in the right places. A couple of times I thought I couldn't go any further and then when I looked down I realised that down wasn't much of an option either - at least not if I didn't want to slide down the mud on my bum! Instead I turned my attention back to Sam, (for whom the thought of not being able to go up wasn't even a distant rumble) and returned to my original thought of what if I could only go up. As if by magic footholes appeared again and branches swayed in the wind to meet my grasp. In no time at all I was at the top on the path with nothing worse than 1 dirty finger! We walked along the top path for a while, but it soon turned to really thick boot sucking mud. At first I was tempted to turn around and take the top path back, but thrilled by my achievement so far I though - what if the was no going back, what if there was only forward? Soon enough I found walking through the mud easy, my feet seemed to just find the firmer ground they needed and we were soon out of the other side of the woods and back on familiar paths. When we emerged we found that the sun had come out, the sky was inexplicably blue and the wind was behind us helping us along our way. We then went on and walked though the fields, happy and excited about the impossible, impassable path we had just taken. My reason for writing this is not just because it was a jolly good dog walk! I am musing at how this kind of thinking can propel us through life, achieving goals and living our dreams. What if there was only up, what if there was only forward, what if there was no going back? If we took this attitude to what may look at the outset like an impossible pathway in our lives, if we took it to the impassable obstacles that prevent us from living our dream, what would we find? Once we have made a commitment to the path and refuse to leave any other options open to ourselves will we find the right footholes and branches miraculously appear and help us to our destination? I think that we will. |
